Donnell McClain (a.k.a. Donel, Donald, Daney or Daniel McClain) was born to Mathias and Eliza (Devore) McClain on June 22, 1859 in Johnson County, Indiana.  He first appears in the 1860 census as Daney in the household of his father in Pleasant Township, Johnson County, Indiana.  In 1870, he appears with his family, in Brown County, Indiana, as Daniel McClain.  In the 1880 census, there is a Donald McClain, born in 1859, living with his grandfather, John L. and Mary A. McClain in Pleasant Township, Johnson County, Indiana.  There are no census records for Indiana from 1890.

The 1900 census record shows Donald McClain living in Clark Township, Johnson County, Indiana with his wife, Sarah E., and four children.  They had married in Johnson County around 1881.  For some reason, his youngest son, William (born 1899), is not listed on the census sheet with the family.  In 1909, he appears as Donil McClain on the marriage registration of his eldest daughter, Daisy.  The 1910 census finds Donel McClain married to Jennie Caldwell and living in Needham Township with their son Donel McClain, Jr.  Johnson County WPA Index to Marriage Records show they were married on December 12, 1904 in Johnson County.  That marriage index also shows Donel marrying Katie Ann Brown on November 17, 1914, but the 1920 census states that he was divorced.  When Donel died, he was married to Anna (McClain) Pool, the widow of Millard Pool.

Donnell was engaged in farming all of his life until around 1921 when he was persuaded by Harry C. Hougham, mayor of Franklin, to move there and become the city street commissioner.  Donel had been a highway superintendent in Needham Township for many year prior and had lived on one of the mayor's farms.  Donel served four years in that position.  He also had a talent in the use of dynamite.  Donel was called upon for many years by farmers who wanted stumps or rocks removed from their tillable lands.  His experience and care in the matter were noted as he never had the slightest approach of an accident.

Donnell McClain died at 7:00 AM on Thursday, June 27, 1929 in his home in Franklin, Indiana.  He had been suffering from arterio sclerosis and had been unable to leave his home for the last month of his life.  Funeral services were held from his residence on Saturday with the Rev. W. E. Brown, pastor of the Grace Methodist Church, officiating.  Many friends and relatives from outside Johnson county were in attendance.  Burial followed in Greenlawn Cemetery in Franklin.  Serving as casket bearers were; Earl Davis, Raymond McClain, Harry McClain, Max McClain, Lora McClain and Roscoe McClain, all nephews of the deceased.  Flowers were carried by; Fannie Pedro, Helen Witt, Eliza Hardin, Alene McClain and Lela Eytcheson. Susan C. McClain was the youngest daughter of John and Catherine (Whitaker) McClain, born in the Glade neighborhood near Whiteland, Indiana on April 18, 1843.  She attended the Glade district school and became a member of the Glade Methodist church.  in 1861 she was married to Wesley Drake and they reared four children.  Wesley died in 1907.  On February 5, 1910 she was married to John R. Owens.  They lived a happy life and were especially congenial.  Both were members of Grace Methodist church in whose interest they served with fine devotion.

Mrs. Susan McClain Owens, wife of J. R. Owens, died on the morning of Friday, October 6, 1922 at 12:05 at the Owens home.  Mrs. Owens had been ill for three months with Bright's disease but her condition became critical the previous Sunday morning when she suffered a stroke of paralysis.  Before her passing, she was unconscious for four days.  Burial was in Greenlawn cemetery beside her first husband, Wesley Drake. [120]

Wesley Drake - husband of Susan Catherine McClain
Wesley Drake was born on January 20, 1834, at Stotts Creek not far from Beech Grove.  He was the son of Gideon and Susan Drake.  When he was about 14 years of age he relocated to Franklin where he learned the carpenter’s trade, following this profession the rest of his life.  For almost 60 years he worked at this trade.  When he moved to Franklin there were but four house to the east of the J.M.& I Railroad and north of Jefferson street.  He had seen all that part of the city built up and had helped to build many of the houses.  Perhaps there was no other citizen in Franklin who had assisted in building so many of the residences found in the city as he.

Wesley Drake was twice married.  He first married Margaret J. Fitzpatrick on 5 May 1859 in Johnson County.  His second marriage was to Miss Susan McClain, on March 21, 1861.  They had three children.  Wesley was a member of the Methodist church and a faithful attendant, whenever able, at all its services.  He was a veteran of the civil war, enlisting in Company L, 79th Indiana Infantry on August 14, 1862.  Wesley served until the close of the war and received an honorable discharge on June 27, 1865.  He was in many of the important conflicts and his comrades said that no braver soldier ever carried a musket.  After 1884 he was a member of Wadsworth Post Grand Army of the Republic.  Mr. Drake was a man of quiet, agreeable manners, thoroughly honest and sincere, devoted to his family, and always ready to befriend a neighbor.  He was greatly esteemed by all who knew him.

Wesley Drake died on Friday afternoon, September 13, 1907, at 3:30 o’clock at his home on Madison and Yandes streets in Franklin, Indiana.  He had been ill all summer, showing a gradual decline in his health.  Advanced age combined with the effects of injuries received a few years prior from a fall while working on a building, and from which he never fully recovered, caused his death.  The funeral services which were held Monday afternoon at 2:30 from Grace M.E. Church conducted by the pastor, Rev. A. D. Batchelor, assisted by Rev. R. R. Bryan of Rockport, were taken in charge at Greenlawn cemetery by the G. A. R. and ritual ceremonies were observed in an impressive way as the body was laid to rest.  Mr. Drake, at the time of his death, was one of the oldest native-born sons of Johnson County and he had lived longer in Franklin than any other resident then living in the city. [121]

John R. Owens - 2nd husband of Susan Catherine McClain
John R. Owens was born a son of George W. and Amanda Owens in Bartholomew County, Indiana on April 16, 1841.  His parents were among the pioneer residents of that county.  When he was twenty years of age, John Owens enlisted for service in the Union army, becoming a member of Co. G, 33rd Indiana Volunteers.  His two brothers were members of the same company and served with him through the war.  Under the leadership of General Thomas, he had participated in many engagements with the Army of the West in Tennessee and Kentucky and the march to Atlanta.  Mr. Owens possessed a never-failing store of anecdotes and incidents which had occurred during the war, these forming an interesting and never-tiring source of inquiry from his friends.

Returning to Bartholomew County after three years in the war, John completed his schooling and graduated from Hartsville college, then one of the leading institutions of the central part of the state.  He taught in the Bartholomew County schools and later served as principal and superintendent of schools in Greenwood, Lebanon and other cities around Indiana.

He moved to Franklin in 1889 and continued as a resident following that time.  Five years after coming to Franklin, John Owens was elected city clerk and served his term with honor.  He was later employed as a bookkeeper at the Smith & Tilson hardware store.  In his later years, he was not engaged in business.

Following his graduation from Hartsville college, on August 19, 1871 John Owens was united in marriage to Miss Anna Fullen, of White River Township, whom he had met during his college days.  To this union were born two sons, Fred R. Owens of Franklin, and Arthur R. Owens of Albany, New York.  Mrs. Owens died in 1903 and several years later John Owens was united in marriage to Mrs. Susan (McClain) Drake, widow of Wesley Drake.

He was a devoted member of the Methodist church from his early life and during the succeeding years had been active in many forms of work for the church.  In later years he had compiled a detailed history of the Grace Methodist church of Franklin, a labor in which he had spent many hours and had taken a keen interest.  Few residents of the city had a larger circle of friends than did Mr. Owens and his keen interest in the events of the day and the firmness of his beliefs made him a man whose decisions were respected and admired.  Besides his service in the Civil War, he taught school for many years in various parts of the state and during his residence in Franklin he served as city clerk and in other capacities.

John R. Owens died early Friday morning when after an extended period of ill health.  Mr. Owens was one of the best known and most respected of the older residents of Franklin and was one of the most active members of the Grand Army of the Republic.  His health had been failing throughout the past four months and he had been confined to his bed at intervals, never giving up to his illness and planning for things that he had intended to do during the summer months and to attend the state G.A.R. encampment again this year.  For his last ten days, he had been up and around the house until a short time before his death, which occurred at 2:00 Friday morning, after a critical condition of only a few hours.  Death was the result of a weakened condition and complications.  Funeral services were held at the Grace Methodist Church at 4:00 Saturday afternoon with the pastor, Rev. W. E. Brown in charge.  Burial was in Greenlawn cemetery. in Franklin. [122]
