Kenneth Carl Hintz was born on July 31, 1905 in St. Joseph, Michigan.  After the family moved to Mishawaka, Indiana around 1912, he left school in the eighth grade (~1919) to help at home with expenses.  Those growing up years were not easy but he did the right things that fit the times.  In 1928 he married Florine Marie Accoe.  Living in Mishawaka, Indiana they were blessed with six children.  But life was not to be easy.  Between the years of 1935 and 1941 Kenneth buried his father, brother, and two daughters, along with saying good-by to his wife of thirteen years.  As a young man of thirty-seven years he was now left to raise his three boys and daughter ranging in ages eleven, ten, four, and one year – eight months.

After being offered, by many relatives, to take certain ones of the four children into their homes, Kenneth decided that although they were a fractured family, they were still a family.  They were to stay together.  After a short time Kenneth’s mother (Amelia Schadler Hintz) came to take care of the family, because she knew her son “needed” her.  This was not an easy decision for a widow aged 60 to make.  Especially after raising six children of her own.

  2 Ewald Ludwig Schadler: 11 Jul 1879 - 15 Jul 1964
    +Marie Hoehn: 12 Feb 1873 - 25 Aug 1948
    3 Frieda Schadler: 1908 - 1956

Ewald Ludwig Schadler was born to Gottlieb and Wilhelmina (Thielmann) Schaedler in Volhynia on July 11, 1879.  He immigrated to America with his family in 1892.  Ewald married Marie Hoehn and had a daughter.  But Ewald's life was not easy.  He was committed to the Kalamazoo State Hospital on the grounds of incompetence.  His name appears in the 1920 U. S. Census as an inmate in the main building.  His entry also lists his status as married.  He lived most of the rest of his life at the hospital, later as an employee rather than an inmate.  In 1945 a final account of his estate was held in the Berrien County Probate Court with the Honorable Malcolm Hatsfield, Judge of Probate, presiding over the hearing.  Ewald died on July 15, 1964 and was buried in the Kalamazoo City Cemetery. [29]

Marie Hoehn – wife of Ewald L. Schadler
Marie Hoehn was born on February 12, 1873 in Germany.  She married Ewald Schadler and they had a daughter, Frieda.  Sometime after their marriage, Marie had Ewald committed to the Kalamazoo State Hospital on the grounds of incompetence.  She then moved to St. Louis, Missouri, taking her daughter Frieda with her.  On August 25, 1948, Marie committed suicide by strangulation while she was a patient in the mental ward of the city infirmary in St. Louis.  She had been a patient in the ward for the three years prior.  Marie was buried in St. Matthew Cemetery on August 28, 1948. 1.4.1 Frieda Schadler (Generation 3)
2 Ewald Ludwig Schadler: 1879 - 1964
   +Marie Hoehn: 1873 - 1948
   3 Frieda Schadler: 28 Apr 1908 - 5 Jul 1956

Frieda Schadler was the sole daughter of Ewald Ludwig Schadler.  Her death certificate states she was born in Pennsylvania on April 28, 1908.  After her father was committed to the Kalamazoo State Hospital, Frieda shows up in the 1920 and 1940 U. S. Census at the home of her uncle, Gottlieb Hoehn, in St. Louis, Missouri.  In 1948, Frieda was listed as the informant on her mother's death certificate.  On July 5, 1956, Albert Samuelson, discovered skeletal remains in the Mississippi River in St. Louis at the foot of Elm Street.  Those remains were determined to be from the body of Frieda Schadler.  While drowning was determined to be the cause of death, motive could not be determined.  It is still unknown whether the drowning was accidental or deliberate.  Frieda's remains were cremated at the Missouri Crematory in St. Louis and her ashes were buried in St. Matthew Cemetery at the grave site of her mother.  No other records regarding Frieda Schadler have been located.
